This is the coincidence that spawned this site. It involves quite a bit of back story, which I’ll condense as best as I can; please bear with me.
Back east, where I used to live, I was married for a short while. The reasons why the marriage failed are numerous and somewhat out of scope for this journal; I’ll omit them here. The important parts are that my ex wife and I were married for just over a year, and were divorced in 1997. It was a difficult time in my life; I lost a lot of friends, but got a great new job. It was hard to decide to leave, but I had to do it, just to get a change of scenery. Everywhere I went I was reminded of good things that had gone horribly wrong. I left in July of 2001, moving to Sacramento because I had family there, and because I had found an even better job.
Coming here had its ups and downs. I have been through many trials here in California; that great job evaporated after two weeks, and I was desitute, almost penniless, and lived with my brother, who was preparing for the Bar exam. We had to move around a lot, even after he passed the Bar, as he got married and had kids. I eventually moved out, and found another good job in 2002. I met a lot of new friends, and finally had a life.
One of my new friend groups was my gaming group. I’ve been an RPG gamer since I was 12, and I will probably never give it up, to my parent’s chagrin. It took a while to find them. Most Sacramento gamers are much more insular and creepy than their east coast counterparts; weeding them out to find the good ones wasn’t easy. However, this group is definitely in the latter category. We have many similar interests and all have grown to be good friends.
Fast forward to August of 2005. I am reading one of my gamer friend’s livejournal, and find something strange - a comment from my ex wife. This startles me a bit. It had been almost a decade since I had spoken to her, and there she was commenting on his blog. I went back over it and the blogs of just about everyone else in the group; there were comments from her all over the place.
As it turned out, her new husband is an RPG designer, and had gotten to know my friends through him. Utterly independent of me mentioning or discussing her, even though she was almost ten years in my past and a fucking CONTINENT away, she somehow had befriended some of my best friends here in California. Needless to say, I was a bit befuddled by this.
The bitch of it is, she and her new husband are talking about moving to LA, and want to come visit. Since I live in the same building as my friends, this may be problematic.
How the fuck did this HAPPEN?
